Refashioning #7: Crochet Chevron Skirt
I may or may not be a hoarder to a certain extent. Even when I was a kid I couldn’t help myself from holding onto things I didn’t necessarily need: notepads and cardboard boxes were pretty big back then, as well as every single plush animal I ever collected.
But as far as clothing goes, this habit has become something of a blessing in disguise- especially since prices on everything are sky-rocketing.
For this skirt, I decided to take one of my last “good” pairs of shorts and combine them with some gray yarn I accidentally ordered too much of for a previous project.
The shorts were actually previously altered from, I think, a Capri-length; when I first got them I didn’t really know my own style that well, so when shorter-shorts started becoming popular I just cut the legs down to fit in.
This pair of shorts was so old that I’ve pretty much worn them to death since I was 15 years old! But, until the stretching and thread-bearing set in, they fit comfortably and and looked great with all of my tunics.
Crocheting the foundation chain into the denim
The majority of the waist still has plenty of good wear left in it, however - although the denim will need a little TLC in a few places where holes could end up forming.
On top of that, I think I’m gonna have to go back in later to insert a lining at the waist - not just for modesty’s sake (because of the crocheted granny-clusters), but also to help the waist and pockets lay properly against my body.
Right now my primary focus is to get the skirt finished and blocked to get a better idea of what the drape and hand will look like.
Near the end of crocheting the skirt, I realized I didn’t really like straight “cut” between the denim shorts and the crochet chevron; it just looked too off-putting to me, and even a little “home-made” (though it technically is, but just roll with me on this one)
I added another row of Chevron more as a decorative featured that I needed to stitch.
I think it does a better job of “blending” the two features together.
So, while there’s still technically a few more things to finish on this skirt, I’m pretty happy with the semi-final results! I was able to make something new and use up a bunch of material that nearly became dead-stock for me (whew!).
If I were going to do this skirt over again, or possibly make another version (such as for a client, wink-wink!), I think I’m going to crochet the entire skirt with the traditional granny cluster stitch. I don’t hate the current look of switching from solid stripes to almost “netted” stripes, but if I’m going to line the skirt anyway then there’s no point inserting a “modesty” section.
For now, though, since I have a few more skirts that need to be lined, I think I’ll put it back on the Z-rack to finish at a later date. Right now, I’ve got to knock out a few more alterations before my mom and I leave for Spain next week…
