Scrappy-Bits: Emotional Support Plants

They’re cute, they’re unique- they help you breathe through the hoopla!

Recently emotion support plants and flowers have been blowing up in the Amigurumi community, and really it’s no surprise why: times are stressful, and having something soft and colorful nearby can make all the difference.

And, since this the day Kentucky decided to have her winter (ya’ll in Lexington know exactly what I mean!), I decided to be productive in between shoveling snow.

As always, I turned to my (finally shrinking!) stash of extra yarn for inspiration. My goal for today was to use all of what was left of my remnants to make a few pretty flowers.

Honestly, I’m pretty happy with how they turned out!

It was definitely my first time making mock-Wisteria (shout out to Kara for the inspiration!), but at least the effect works really well when it’s hanging, I’m pleased to say.

I’ve also been in hung cactus and succulent kick lately; I think it has a lot to do with my sudden infatuation with post-stitching. The appearance of living cacti is surprisingly easy to imitate with this technique alone!

While I was making these arrangements, I decided that I’m going to use them for the few craft shows I plan to apply for this year. To make them, I literally scrape the bottom of the barrel from my personal yarn stash (sometimes with rolls so small you can literally use them for stuffing toys instead!), so the material cost for each is essentially impossible for me to calculate.

On top of that, I enjoy the zen I feel in just putting the pieces together and making them look pretty. For me personally, these types of projects aren’t the kind I would want to mass-produce even if the idea is currently trending. Because, that’s kind of the point of emotional support anything: it’s the peace and pure pleasure that comes from the craft that’s more valuable.

Anyway, I do plan to start writing down my favorite flower patterns (and their meanings!), so look for those soon! But until then, I’m going to take the next snow day (tomorrow) to finish cleaning my stash and organizing my ever growing collection!
