Hurricane Granny Square

I randomly came across this design while browsing Facebook one day. And loved it so much, I knew I had to take a crack at recreating it! I’m still trying to relocate the post so I can find the original name (if it has one), but for now I’m simply calling it “The Hurricane” just so I don’t get it mixed up with other swirl-styles.

Inspiration photo taken from FB, submitted by anonymous group member (though I’m sure “Handiwork DIY” is it’s point of origin).

Similar to the circle center square, this pattern makes use of circular designs to create a unique effect. It can also be a little tricky because it “stacks” stitches, each with a different height. Make sure to work slowly and take your time when working this design for the first time.

Materials:

  • Size J-10 hook

  • medium-weight yarn

  • snips

  • stitch counters (OPT.)

Instructions:

  1. ch 6 and sl st to make ring; then ch 3 (counts as 1st DC);

  2. then DC 15 into the center ring sp; sl st into the 3rd st of ch;

  3. next ch 7 and sc into the same ch sp; then across the next 3 sts, hdc, DC, and trc;

  4. *ch 3 then, without skipping stitches, <SC, hdc, DC, trc>*
    Repeat (*) once;

  5. to end the rnd, ch 3 then <SC, hdc, DC> into the last 3 sts; then sl st into the 4th ch at start;

  6. to start next rnd, ch 1 and sc into the 1st ch sp;

  7. then in the same ch sp, SC 1 and hdc 2 for a total of 4 sts in the ch sp;

  8. then DC 2 and trb 2 to the end of the rnd;

  9. <ch 3, then, in the same ch sp, 2 SC & 2 hdc; then DC 2 and trb 2>; repeat this twice across rnd, carefully trb in the starting sl st to finish;

  10. ch 3 then sl st into the 1st sc; ch 1 and hdc into the same ch sp; then hdc into the next st;
    DC into the next 3 sts, then trb into the next 3 sts;

  11. *ch. 3 to turn corner, then, in next ch sp, 3 SC and 1 hdc;
    <hdc 2, DC 3, trb 3>*
    Repeat (*) twice across rnd;

  12. to finish rnd, ch 3 then, in last ch sp, 3 SC & 1 hdc (for a total of 4 sts in ch sp); then sl st into the first hdc of rnd;

  13. to finish the square:
    ch 1 and SC into the same st;
    then sc strait across side of square;

  14. at the 1st ch sp <sc 1, then ch 1, and sc 2> (this will turn the corner); sc strait along side; repeat this process around square;

  15. sl st into the 1st sc to finish, then clip yarn and tuck extra into stitches;

  16. Don’t forget to block your square before piecing!
