Mini-Daisy Square

Daisies are some of the most popular granny square designs out there - and for very good reasons: representing sweetness, youth, and innocence, they are an easy motif to invoke in a dozen different ways.

Seriously, there’s no telling just how many different daises you can make with crochet!

This one is especially my favorite because of it’s simplicity - all you need is 2 different stitches. That’s it!

One of them is the “Pineapple” stitch (a type of bobble-stitch), so it you’re brand new to crocheting it can seem a little daunting at first glance. All doubts aside, though, trust me - once you learn the pineapple stitch, you will never go back. It’s that good!

Materials:

  • Size H/9 crochet hook

  • 3 skeins, different colors (recommended: 1 black, 1 gold/yellow, 1 pink)
    NOTE: you can also use yarn remnants for both practice and to clear out your extra material

  • snips

Instructions:

  1. ch 3 then sl st to form a ring
    NOTE: this can be a tight ring to work with so go slowly; it can also be done with a 4 ch, if your fingers need a break!

  2. ch 1 then insert hook into center ring sp, and SC 12; SL st into the 1st sc of the rnd;

  3. clip yarn and pull ch loose to switch skeins; you will re-crochet this stitch once the new color has been added;

  4. Here you will complete a rnd of pineapple stitches to create the petals of the daisy;
    To start:

    ch 2 then *wrap YOH and insert into the same ch sp;* pull thru and repeat (*) once;
    wrap YOH and pull through all 5 loops on the hook; ch 1;

  5. to complete a full pineapple stitch:
    Repeat (*) 3 times for a total of 7 loops on hook; wrap YOH and pull thru all 7, then ch 1;

  6. Repeat Pineapple Stitch from step #5 in the next 10 sts for a total of 12 petals;

  7. at the end of rnd, SL st into the top of the 1st pineapple; switch skeins;

  8. ch 2 then insert hook into the ch sp BEHIND the ch. 2 of PREVIOUS rnd (this will be referred to as the ‘overlap’ stitch); DC 1;

  9. 3 DC into the next ch sp; repeat for next ch sp;
    **ch 2 to form corner, then 3 DC into the next 3 ch sp**;

  10. repeat (**) twice to form the next two corners;

  11. At last corner ch 2 then DC 1 into ch so of 1st overlap DC; sl st into 1st DC;

  12. ch 1 then insert hook into ch sp and SC;
    ***SC across then once into corner; ch 2 then SC again into corner and SC across***

  13. repeat (***) across rnd; then sl st into 1st sc and clip yarn to finish;
    secure and tuck the excess for a seamless finish.

OPT: for best results gently stretch the corners and block the squares before piecing together.
